IMCI FOCUS GOALS

According to data collected from the MDH in 2022 it showed “ Black Minnesotans represent 13% of the birthing population but made up 23% of pregnancy-associated deaths, and American Indian Minnesotans represent 2% of the birthing population, but 8% of pregnancy-associated deaths.” IMCI will focus on finding ways that can reduce some of the maternal and child mortality rates in the marginalized community. How would we do this ( advocacy for more pregnancy screening, pre/postnatal care by finding and connecting them to their needed services, educating women on pregnancy care and birthing, educational interventions on vaccine hesitancy for children

IMCI
  • Increase the rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration
  • Increase enrollment of more culturally appropriate doulas and community health worker certification programs

Tackling Disparities in Maternal Health

Ifrah Ahmed is a passionate public health advocate, behavior analyst in training, and founder of the International Maternal Care Initiative (IMCI).

As a Somali-American woman who grew up in an underserved community, Ifrah witnessed firsthand the deep disparities in maternal and infant health care—especially for women of color, refugees, and immigrants.

These experiences ignited her lifelong commitment to ensuring that no mother is left behind due to systemic barriers, cultural disconnects, or lack of support.

What our Clients say

"When I was pregnant with my second child, I felt overwhelmed and unsure. I live in a rural area where access to medical care is limited. The Maternal Care Initiative didn’t just help me — they held my hand through it all. From regular check-ups to nutrition advice and even helping me prepare for delivery, they were with me every step of the way. Today, my baby girl is healthy and strong. I truly believe this program saved our lives."

Fatima A.

"As a midwife, I’ve worked with many organizations, but the Maternal Care Initiative is different. They focus on dignity, education, and empowerment. I’ve seen women go from being scared and uninformed to feeling confident about their bodies and their choices. This initiative doesn't just improve outcomes — it transforms lives."

Grace N

Midwife

"When my wife got pregnant, I didn’t know how to support her. The Maternal Care Initiative didn’t leave me out — they welcomed me in. They taught both of us about safe pregnancy practices and newborn care. We felt like a team. Our son was born safely, and we owe so much of that to the guidance and care we received. It’s more than medical help — it’s compassion in action."

Daniel K

Father

"Before I joined the Maternal Care Initiative, I was scared and alone. I didn’t have anyone to turn to with my questions — not even about basic things like what to eat or how to handle the pain. They treated me like family. The nurses and volunteers checked on me regularly and made sure I felt seen, not just as a patient, but as a person. My baby boy came into the world healthy, and I felt strong and prepared. I’ll never forget what they did for us."

Linda M

Firtt-time mom

"When I found out I was pregnant, I was dealing with job loss and no health insurance. I didn’t know how I was going to get the care I needed. The Maternal Care Initiative stepped in without hesitation — prenatal checkups, mental health support, even help getting baby supplies. They made me feel like I mattered. I delivered a healthy baby girl, and I’m forever grateful they were there when I had nowhere else to turn."
